Autumn 1
In Geography, we will be learning all about the United Kingdom. We will explore maps, find out about each country /capital city and taste some traditional foods. In Science, we will be learning about our 5 senses. In Art, we will be studying the artist / sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, including having a go at creating our own nature art pieces. In Computing, we will be working with algorithms, initially with practical activities, then moving on to programming Bee-bots.
Autumn 2
In History, we will be comparing life now to life within the past 100 years, including a very exciting trip to Portland Basin Museum to bring this to life! Our Science focus will be ‘Seasonal Change’, where we will start to observe our local environment over time. In DT, we will be learning about slider and lever mechanisms, applying this new knowledge to create our own moving Christmas cards. In Computing, we will continue working on programming, using more challenging algorithms and exploring the Bee-bot app.
Spring 1
In History, we will be focusing on the inspirational Mary Seacole, learning about her life and what made her so inspirational. In Science, we will be looking at ‘Everyday Materials’, considering different materials and their properties, and conducting our very own comparative test. In Art, we will be working with a specialist Art Teacher to create paintings in the style of Hilma af Klint. In Computing, we will be learning about technology all around us, before learning how to do some basic tasks using a laptop.
Spring 2
In Geography, we will be comparing the human and physical features in Ashton-under-Lyne / England with another country. In Science, we will be learning about plants, identifying and naming a variety of types and learning about their basic structure. In DT, we will be learning about plants that we can eat, before moving on to designing, preparing and evaluating our own delicious fruit salads! In Computing, we will complete a unit on digital painting, using different tools and techniques to create our own online art.
Summer 1
In History, our topic will be ‘Moving through the Monarchs’, where we will learn about important monarchs throughout history, such as King Henry VIII and Queen Victoria. In Science, our focus will be ‘Animals, including Humans’, where we will be identifying, classifying and comparing a range of different animals. This will be enhanced with a trip to an aquarium! In Art, we will be working with a specialist Art Teacher to create drawings in the style of James Rizzi. In Computing, we will be working on our basic skills in Microsoft Word, typing a simple sentence and copying and pasting an image.
Summer 2
In Geography, we will be focusing on map skills, including a local visit to Chadwick Dam. In Science, we will continue our work on animals but will also revisit seasonal change as we move from Spring to Summer. In DT, we will be using a variety of materials, tools and techniques to creating freestanding structures. In Computing, we will create some basic animations using the Scratch Jr app.
